The New York City Marathon is one of the largest races of all time and it is no surprise that over 2 million spectators support the race each year. As a spectator, with 26.2 miles to choose from, choosing a place to watch seems almost as daunting as running in the race itself!
Our favorite places to watch in Manhattan:
- First Avenue and 59th Street is always a great choice. The large crowds here are certainly encouraging for the runners and spectators alike.
- If you’re looking for some breathing room, head north to First Avenue between 65th and 96th Streets.
- Central Park South is the best place to catch a glimpse of the runners as they approach the finish line.
Here are a few spectator tips:
- Pack warm clothes and snacks. You never know when cold or hunger may strike!
- Be sure to discuss start time and expected pace per mile with your favorite runner in advance to ensure you know when he/she is approaching.
- Wear sneakers – comfort is essential!
- Bring a copy of the course map.
- Bring a Metrocard with you, or at least have cash to purchase a ticket. Don’t even think about cabs or driving.
- Make a funny or encouraging sign if you’d like. Click here for hilarious examples.
Enjoy the day!
